Tuition Across the US
Tuition. Every year it increases and increases and families find themselves paying more and more money… At least, that’s how it felt growing up in the North East. In this post, I will break down ~250 schools across the United States, and break down each region to discuss the cost of colleges in each area.
Looking at this map of the North east, it’s clear to see how many school’s have such a high price in such a small area. Out of the 52 schools in the North East listed and displayed on this map, 18 of them are listed over $40,000 in tuition prices alone. In comparisons to the other regions, this 35% 40k+ group is staggering.
Now, taking a look at the Southern colleges of the same coast, it’s very apparent only 3 schools out of 50 come close to the 50k mark. In fact, those three are also the only 3 schools listed over 30k, and make up 3/5 of the schools above 20k.
Next we move farther inland to look at the midwest. It’s important to note that while there are quite of a few green/dark green markers, with the exception of St. Louis University, they are largely concentrated around the great lakes. On top of that, even including St. Louis, there are only 8 out of 50 school’s above the 40k marker.
Next we move onto the southern portion of the country. The first thing to be noticed when looking at these schools is that the significance of the dark green marker. In all the other maps, the darkest green means the schools tuition is around the 40–50k+ amount. With that understood, it’s very clear to see that southern schools are far cheaper than the rest.
When one usually thinks of the Western U.S., the first word that usually pops up in the mind is “expensive.” The fact of reality is that while there are some expensive schools in California, 48 out of the 50 schools listed for this area don’t even come near to the 50k mark. In fact, only 13 schools (not including the 2 above 50k) have tuition listed over 10k, and none of those are more expensive than 12k.
After reviewing these 250 schools across the United States, it’s clear that the most expensive schools are located in and around the tri-state area on the east coast. When I was a high-schooler looking for schools to go to, I had only looked around the nearest states to mine, NJ, if only I had looked a little farther I could have found many more schools of way better value.
